ROUND 1
18 APRIL 2010
SOUTHERN SAINTS V GLEN ORDEN
Over 47’s Match Report 18th April 2010
Southern Saints Over 47’s took on Glen Orden for Round 1 of season 2010, at the Peterson Reserve in Highett. On a newly resurfaced ground, and in magnificent sunshine, we kicked into a slight breeze in the first term. The breeze proved to be no obstacle, however, as with great drive out of the centre from Fleish and Mick O., we repeatedly drove the ball forward, where George, Wayne and Joey were rewarding the mid field by putting goals on the board.
Sniffa, in his first game back for Southern Saints, racked up numerous possessions on the wing and half forward line, and was instrumental in setting up a number of our goals. Meanwhile in the forward pocket, first gamer Craig was using his pace to great effect and causing their back line havoc.
Second quarter, kicking with the breeze, saw a drop in our intensity. Perhaps we thought the wind would do the job for us. We still had the ascendency, but it was proving to be a tough contest.
At half time Glen Orden were down a couple of players, and Stevie O. volunteered to defect, to help the opposition out. The change in momentum was immediate. Within the first minute on the 3rd quarter, they had their first goal on the board, and a couple of minutes later, their next, and then their next. Eventually, we managed to settle things down and played out the quarter. In the last quarter, we showed that we had the fitness and held on to a handy lead to run out comfortable winners.
Some highlight from the game were –
· Dave Bails run into the forward line in the last qtr, through a pack of Glen Orden players, with all the Saints around him yelling “your HOT, your HOT”. The further he ran with the ball, it seemed, the less interested the Glen Orden players were in tackling him. Must be some kind of invisible force field he was employing.
· Burkey’s second half, tagging “Creamy”. A tough and somewhat unrewarding job, but one which prevented their best player having any further influence on the game.
· The great first game contribution from first gamers Craig K, Dicko, and Mick Scammell.
· Fitzy’s tireless work in the ruck

What a fantastic day to kick off the start of the season proper. With Nathan, Keano, George, Mick and others arriving early to set up the BBQ and ensure the beers were cold. Everybody got there early which reduced the stress on the coach and trainer and ensured we were ready to play on time. Unfortunately, the opposition weren't so organised and a little bit too much warm up enthusiasm on our behalf in the hot sun may have created fatigue towards the end of the game.
Our numbers were good and we had some fantastic contributors throughout the day. Including Abe's constant run up and down the field, if we had of been more direct he may have only had to run half a marathon. Grant Gaston was an excellent target at Centre Half Forward, if only we had of gone there more often, he would have got lead poisoning. Sym was his usual friendly self, letting the opposition know that he was about everytime they got near the ball, crunching everybody in sight and making the backs stand 10 feet tall around him. And finally Joffa showed his remarkable staying ability allbe it too long and wasting valiable time on the ground towards the end of the game. Hence we lost by 10 points. Did I happen to mention he was knocked out. The only thing that could revive him was Pete's sweet voice and his move in for the kiss of life (death) that leapt Joffa to his feet. Great to have two new blokes come down to join the club on Sunday in Tim and Costa, which will be handy inclusions to the club.
A few skill errors, not following up our kicks, not playing direct, and a little fatigue cost us the points and what should have been a great victory. Lets learn from this, get to training if for nothing else but to bag Joffa for wasting those crucial minutes while he lay dead in the last quarter, or to teach Billy Ottis how to hand pass not hog and get caught.
6 beers will be up for grabs for the best performance at training to be shared with the winners nominated mates, must be drunk at the club. See you all tonight for training.
Cheers
