GISBORNE:

Ron Frank

Round 7 kicked off with a top of the ladder battle and Gisborne leaving early Sunday morning for a midday start at the Hampton ground. Along the way a Gisborne car went missing which result in 17 players and a draft pick, which Gisborne used to select the much travelled Ron “Frankie” Frank.

Expecting an easy win Sniffa coached from the sidelines. The first half saw Southern hold a good lead. Neil showed his usual handy ball skills, Billy D ensured that nothing got past the half back flank, Pepe held marks and Micky O chipped in with some lovely goals. The boys had every right to be happy at half time. Of course Joey ran past everyone to have shots as he pleased...”delicious’ is a word that comes to mind.

Dicko claimed the wing position as his own (leaving Tas to fight his way back into the team). Wayne and Fleisch couldn’t be contained in the key forward positions. Whilst Ashkar and Steve Lewis didn’t really have a lot to do in the last line of defence thanks to the in-form half back flank.

The third quarter let Gisborne claw back to be down 6.4.40 to 2.8.20. The rain came down in the last quarter but no one expect to see the Southern players fumble and generally piss fart around with the ball. Gisborne kicked one goal, then another and again. Meanwhile Whitey, who always thinks he get a goal on Ronnie F, was held kickless!! Surely damaging the confidence of the home team. Then it happened – a goal with the ball kicked off the ground by Gisborne. Siren goes..Gisborne (with only 16 players win). Frankie is hailed a hero by the Gisborne boys..(well maybe not).

We witnessed the boys clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. ..and this is how they thank Sniffa for coaching?

Southern Saints 6.4 lost to Gisborne 5.11

Over 40s Masters

Southern Saints 6.7 lost to Craigieburn 14.3

Sunday the 18th came and went with a lot of highs and lows.

We started with what really was a great side on the park and some fantastic camaraderie in the changing room.

This joviality was quickly diminished with a very poor second to the ball effort in the first quarter with very little accountability and a severe lack of sharing of the ball.

We made a far better fist of things in the second quarter with much more of the ball, but yet still not sharing enough and poor kicking cost us a chance to even the score.

With the rain and wind starting to impact the movement of the ball, we struggled to move quickly enough and agin share it with the few that made the effort to run into open space. The opposition were skillful and made the most of every opportunity kicking 13.3 to our 6.9 for the game.

I would rather reflect on the highs; which were the enjoyment I gained from the camaraderie within the group before the game, the efforts of many players to help even though they were injured, jetlagged and especially those that had to back up for the supers, without a complaint or request to play in the forward pocket. For the first time this year it really felt like a team and players were there to enjoy themselves and have a kick of footy with their mates. Regardless of the result we walked off disappointed but willing to stick at it. As the saying goes you learn more from people during diversity than you do when things are going well.

We haven't had the best of seasons but we have all had a kick and enjoyed the Wednesday nights after training. With a new venue, better facilities and somewhere we can call home next year there is a lot to look forward to.

With only two games to go let’s make the most of the opportunity to tell our wives and partners that we have footy training tonight and not have to get home until midnight.

Over 35s

Southern Saints 15.6 d Craigieburn 6.5

It’s official – round 6 was a draw which means the finals are a distinct possibility.

The only hiccup was before half time Craigieburn kicked 3 quick goals to keep in the game.

After half time ..well a nine goal win ensured. Having a four time all Australian (General) watching inspired the boys to greatness.

Drills practiced at training looked ‘delicious’when carried out in the game. Who can forget the ‘no look’handball by the elder statesman (keano) to a man running around him. Skins was on the half back and half forward line simultaneously..he chased his own kick. Choco played like a 32 year old and ran all day. Nathan continued his excellent training form.

Children screamed when Abe was chasing a ball going over the line – his face said it all. He had more bandages than Michael Jackson in the Thriller music clip.

Ruck work was shared by the tall timber – Simon Fanning and Matt Perriam.

We asked coach garth for his comments and he said nothing. Maybe he couldn’t put his feeling into words. This was a great team game.

Now for the ladder...
