ROUND 8 01 AUGUST 2010
OVER 35 SUPERS
Melbourne 5.3 lost to Southern Saints 6.6
From the coach: Garth McLardie
After a slogging win in atrocious and trying conditions at Melbourne on Sunday the Southern saints have kept their Finals aspirations very much alive, with the decider to be played against Parkdale at Clayton in a Fortnights time.
Fighting, Rain, Hail and a gale force winds at times the Saints showed discipline early in locking the ball up and slowing the game down to negate the wind advantage that Melbourne held in the first quarter. A set play of Bus to Freddy gave us a valuable goal in the opening quarter to go in even at quarter time.
A slugfest in the midfield saw goals to Bartlett 2, Bamert and Comer to see the Saints have a handy 3 goal lead at Half time. Braddles relished being relieved from backline duties with an on ball role.
Third quarter saw defensive tactics again rule but Melbourne wouldn’t lie down, and their 3 goals came from some fortunate/or unfortunate bits of scrambly play.
Scores level at ¾ time Saints got 1 point in front due to a Bus chunk from dead in front, Melbourne levelled and as Abe saved the day after Lewie let one through between bat and pad, points to Perriam and Comer had Saints in front when finally a kick from the coach that didn’t go out on the full was snaffled by Baby Face who coolly nailed it from the pocket to seal the game.
Goals to Bartlett 2, Comer Bamert Fanning and Perriam. Great gutsy effort by all – Freddy and Braddles great, JB as always and some nice work from Hatters and debutant Lynchy down back.

Ron Frank
An undermanned Melbourne had no choice but to select Ronnie Frank. The game was played before the rains fell in rather sunny conditions.
Melbourne’s crappy kicking for goal let them down in a game that was closer than the scores indicated.
Highlights: Gergeous George dodging 4 Melbourne defenders to kick an inspiorational goal Gergeous George kicking straight Rayo smashing the packs Dicko and Stevie around the ground. Billy Derham was identified as a key player early on (and that’s it – no one wanted to tag him) When time stood still - Melbourne’s Frankie flying and marking over a pack
