Round 9

SOUTHERN SAINTS vs Diamond Valley

16 August 2009

“YES WE CAN”

-win a game for the season

-avoid relegation

SUPERS OVER 35s:

DiamV 9.4 lt SthnSts 13.9

“Yes we can” proved true as the Saints marched to victory over an opponent that wouldn’t say die.

Round 9 saw the Southern Saints head to Diamond Valley in what was the battle to avoid relegation (and a winless season). Motivated by $1000 over the bar on Mad Monday from General the boys led all day and were unstoppable.

Not everyone was happy though…Keano looked a lonely figure on the bench during the game. Not so the hecklers in the crowd – it was good to see the Saints and DV boys laying into “el presidente’

On the field the General took charge and the team responded. At ¾  time the decision was made not to change the team. In General’s words “Keano bench”

Goal kickers:

Mick O’Neill 3, Joe Quintal 2, Reidy 2, Rob Walker 1, Rob Bartlett 3, Mick 1

In the rooms after the match the coach thanked Steve Ambler for all the work he has done.

Highlights:

  • Robbie Walker’s presence lifted the team
  • Choco played well all day on the half forward line
  • The long and accurate kicking from Robbie Walker and Jason Bamert.

MASTERS  OVER 40S

DiamV 12.7 d SthnSts 5.12

Now this was a confusing game to watch. Southern Saints had more than 60% of the play yet managed to lose this match?

About seven of the DV goals were kicked inside the 10m goal square with no pressure!

Highlights:

  • Nathan kicking 70 metre torp out of defence
  • Ronny F lightening handpass...Greg Williams esk!!
  • Willow just doing it for the Club...2 x superb games to finish the season
  • Use of ball by hand in slippery conditions...1st class
  • Brett taking on the role of ruck and doing an outstanding job
  • Stripper burning up the wing all day with pace and precision passing
  • Abe's goal, kicked the ball off the ground from 30 out (yet another nomination for goal of the year)
  • Pat's dominance in generating inside 50's and showing bursts of speed that had many asking if he is really over 40….

Thanks to Youngy for coaching. The guys were quite impressed with his tactics and clever use of the bench.

Thanks to Ronny V for coaching this season.

Best...

Nathan , Matt Levy , Abe, Pat, Stripper, Willow

 Goal kickers

Abe x 2

Shaun x 1

Some others x 2.

Over 47s

DiamV 6.10 d SthnSts 4.4

It rained all day and the skills reflected this. It was always a close game as shown by the scores.

Tas kicked a goal which lifted the team (it took a sesoned defender)

Micky O played well all day

Stevie in sensational form again

Wayne held down CHF and did well when others got out of his space

Fitzy was easily best on ground. Rucked well all day, took marks and earned the hard kicks.

Willow proved inspirational (like Fitzy) even though injured
